Just the mention of bed bugs can send shivers down the spine of any homeowner. You might think they’re a problem that happens to other people, not you. Yet, the reality is that these uninvited guests could make their way into any home, turning restful nights into restless worries. With the rise of bedbug incidents across Australia, arming yourself with knowledge and the right tools for battle is essential.
Understanding Bed Bugs: Identification and Habits
What do bed bugs look like?
They are small, reddish-brown insects that prefer to come out at night to feast on unsuspecting sleepers. Their size, similar to an apple seed, allows them to sneak into the smallest of crevices, going unnoticed until their numbers swell.
What are their habits?
These creatures are not drawn to dirt or decay but to blood, meaning any human habitat, clean or cluttered, can become their dining room. They tend to stick close to their feeding areas (think beds, couches, and anywhere people rest), waiting for the cover of darkness to emerge and feed.
How to check for bed bugs?
It involves a bit of detective work. Look for small, rust-coloured stains on sheets, mattresses, and furniture—a telltale sign of their presence. You might also spot their shed skins or, in more severe cases, the bugs themselves hiding in the seams of mattresses, between couch cushions, or even behind wallpaper.

Essential Tools and Ingredients for DIY Bed Bug Control
At-home repellent
Arm yourself with a concoction that’s both potent against pests and kind to the planet. Ingredients like diatomaceous earth, a natural, non-toxic powder, can be your first line of defence, wreaking havoc on bed bugs by dehydrating their exoskeletons upon contact.
Steam clean killer
How to remove bed bugs from mattresses? Crank up the heat with a good steam cleaner. Bed bugs and their eggs cannot survive temperatures above 120°F (49°C), making steam cleaning a chemical-free method to sanitise bigger objects.
Suck the bugs up
The trusty vacuum is a vital ally in sucking them up from every nook and cranny. Equip it with a bag or a HEPA filter to trap the critters securely. After each session, seal and dispose of the bag or empty the canister outside to prevent escapees.
Use protective covers
Encase your mattresses and pillows in bedbug-proof covers. These barriers are not just defensive walls but also limit the areas where they can hide and breed, making your bed a fortress against invasions.
Launder away the pests
Turn your washing machine into a bedbug battleground by laundering your bedding, curtains, and clothes at high temperatures. A high-efficiency detergent adds an extra punch, ensuring no bug survives.
Step-by-Step Guide to DIY Bed Bug Treatment:
- Identify and isolate
First, confirm your uninvited guests are indeed bed bugs. Look for small, brownish insects or telltale signs like blood spots and faecal stains on your mattress. Once confirmed, isolate the affected area to prevent further spread.
- Clean and declutter
Begin the battle with a thorough cleaning. Declutter the area around the infested site to eliminate their hideouts. Vacuum the mattress, bed frame, and surrounding areas meticulously. Seal and dispose of the vacuum bag immediately to capture any fugitives.
- Steam and heat
Wield the power of steam across every inch of your mattress, focusing on seams and tags, the bedbugs’ favourite hiding spots. Follow up by laundering all bed linens, curtains, and clothing in hot water and drying them at the highest heat setting to annihilate any lingering pests.
- Apply diatomaceous earth
Create a barrier with diatomaceous earth around your bed and in any cracks and crevices where they might travel or hide. This non-toxic powder is deadly to bedbugs, causing dehydration and death upon contact.
- Monitor and maintain
After treatment, vigilance is essential. Place interceptors under bed legs to catch any stragglers and monitor regularly. Repeat the cleaning and inspection process frequently to ensure your victory is complete and lasting.

Just bought your bed bug powder is it harmless to the skin and can i put it all over the matress where i sleep and put a fitted sheet on and sleep on top of that so they dont come as my bed is on a fixed concrete bed base.
Tony Abrahams says
Hi Josh
It is harmless to the skin, it is a food grade product so its safe if ingested. Please don’t use on your mattress because its a super fine mineral powder that is not good to breath in when sleeping. Use a mattress encasement to stop bed bugs living on your bed.
Dust the powder on the top and sides of the concrete bed base to kill bed bugs trying to access your bed. The powder takes approx 9 days to kill.
